“Great employee benefits aren’t just a perk – they’re a powerful tool to attract and keep the best people.”

I started my career drafting pension scheme trust rules in a back office. It was technical, important work but I quickly realised I didn’t want to stay there. I wanted to be out in the real world, seeing first-hand how well-designed financial solutions could genuinely change people’s lives. This interest took me from Edinburgh to Hampshire, then London, then Manchester, driving everything I’ve done in the 37 years since.

Early in my career, I became fully qualified consultant in my mid 20s at a major global consultancy – looking after pension funds at household names including Johnson & Johnson. But the real turning point came when I saw the UK economy shift. Large employers were fragmenting into hundreds of smaller businesses, all competing for the same talented people, yet most of those smaller businesses had access to little more than a basic, off-the-shelf pension scheme. That gap needed filling, and I’ve spent the best part of two decades doing exactly that.

My passion is giving businesses of every size the kind of sophisticated, flexible benefits package that used to be reserved for global corporates. A one-size-fits-all approach doesn’t work anymore. The UK workforce looks nothing like the 1950’s nuclear family many benefit packages were built around. Whether it’s offering employees the choice to redirect life cover into critical illness protection, or modernising a pension scheme so it genuinely reflects how people live and work today, the goal is always the same: help employers recruit, reward and retain the very best people.

What makes my approach different is  technology. Most employee benefits consultants hand clients a great package and then leave them to run it. I don’t. Through Mattioli Woods’ own tech solutions, we automate the administration, give employees the tools to understand and model their own choices, and provide a fully managed service so HR teams aren’t drowning in paperwork. One Nottinghamshire technology firm came to me with a modest HR function and a brief to stand out in a competitive recruitment market. Nine months later, they had a modern, flexible benefits package, take-up rates through the roof, and an administration burden that had effectively disappeared. They give us data once a month; we do the rest.

Clear communication is at the heart of everything I do. Our industry loves jargon. Pensions and employee benefits can sound dry and complex, but strip it back and the message is simple: your people can’t work forever, and the benefits you offer today will determine whether the best ones choose you tomorrow. That message, delivered plainly and with real conviction, is what I’ve been taking to boardrooms for nearly four decades. I’ve spoken at international conferences, judged the Corporate Adviser Awards for nearly 20 years and once took a pensions story to the front page of a national newspaper.

If you’re a business owner or HR leader looking to build a benefits package that genuinely works – one that takes the administration off your desk and helps you compete for the best talent – I’d welcome the conversation.
