Before starting my career in financial planning. I had over two and half decades of self-employment as an electrician, which included contracts around Europe. This allowed me to work in Austrian ski resorts in my 20s to satisfy my love of skiing. To scratch that skiing itch further, I also spent a decade living in Canada with my family, where I had a moment of clarity and began my financial adviser career in 2010.
This mix of life skills, self-employment and uprooting my whole family to the other side of the world gave me something a lot of advisers don’t have: a genuine feel for the big decisions that keep people awake at night.
I won’t dazzle you with jargon or sit here in a three-piece suit making wealth management sound more complicated than it is. If I think something’s not right, I’ll tell you. My directness, built on years of making real decisions with real money, is what clients tell me they value most.
One of the most rewarding things I do is tell someone that, financially, they can actually stop working. I met a client a few years ago – burned out, miserable at work and convinced they were trapped. We built a cash-flow model together and I showed them they could retire. The following month, they went on a cruise – they came back a different person and retired shortly after. There was no grand restructuring or complicated product, I was just helping someone see their own numbers clearly.
Alongside retirement and wealth planning, I have extensive experience in Inheritance Tax (IHT) planning, trust investment planning, business protection, Venture Capital Trusts (VCT), and shareholder and key person protection for business owners and senior professionals. I understand the pressures and opportunities that come with being self-employed or running an SME and that empathy means conversations tend to get to the point faster.
