Mentorship at the Mattioli Woods Financial Adviser Academy

The transition from trainee to adviser doesn’t happen in the classroom. It happens in real conversations, with real clients, making real decisions.

That is why term three – a six-month intensive mentorship – sits at the centre of the Mattioli Woods Financial Adviser Academy. It’s where your Level 4 qualification is put into practice and where capability is built – not just knowledge.

    Mentorship at a glance

    • One-to-one coaching with a senior adviser
    • Six months of active shadowing and real client exposure
    • Structured development from observation to delivery
    • Ongoing support through a nine-month Launch phase

    Our financial coaching

During term 3, you’re paired with an experienced Mattioli Woods adviser. This is not random and all pairings are based on:

    • Complementary strengths
    • Development areas
    • Personality and working style

The aim is simple: to accelerate your development by learning from someone who already does the role at a high level.

Your development follows a clear progression:

    Observation

You begin by shadowing client meetings.

    • Seeing how conversations are structured
    • Understanding how advisers ask questions
    • Observing how complex situations are handled

This is where theory starts to become real.

    Co-pilot

    You then begin contributing.

    • Supporting file preparation
    • Researching technical areas
    • Helping shape recommendations

    You’re involved, but supported.

    Taking the reins

    Finally, you begin leading.

    • Running sections of meetings
    • Communicating with clients
    • Making recommendations

All under the guidance of your mentor.

This is not simulated learning, it’s real experience – with a safety net.

The benefits of one-to-one financial advice training

There’s a clear difference between learning financial advice in theory and developing the ability to deliver it in practice. Generic training can explain concepts, but it cannot show you how decisions are made in real time, or how conversations with clients actually unfold.

One-to-one mentorship bridges that gap. You receive immediate feedback, real-time correction and direct insight into how experienced advisers think, structure conversations and respond to complexity. You’re not left to guess what ‘good’ looks like. You see it, you practise it, and you refine it over time.

Each week includes structured one-to-one sessions with your mentor, where your development is reviewed in detail. These sessions focus on the areas that matter most in practice – how you communicate with clients, how you ask questions, how you listen, and how you handle uncertainty or challenge. Over time, this builds the confidence to translate technical knowledge into clear, practical advice.

This learning is primarily face-to-face. Time is spent both in the office and on-site with clients, ensuring that development happens in the environments where advice is actually delivered.

    Leadership for our advisers

Mentorship at Mattioli Woods is not just about teaching – it’s about leadership. Every senior adviser involved in the Academy takes responsibility for developing others, providing guidance and oversight, and investing in the success of the next generation.

This creates a different kind of environment. You’re not learning in isolation, but within a culture where knowledge is shared, standards are reinforced and development is continuous. Even as a trainee, you’re part of that system – contributing to, and benefiting from, the same professional standards that define the firm.

From the classroom to your first clients

Every piece of work is reviewed, every recommendation is supported and every step is guided.

This creates a controlled environment in which to develop your confidence. You’re learning:

    + How to structure advice
    + How to manage complexity
+ How to guide clients through decisions

Without the risk of being on your own too early.

Succeed with our financial adviser support

Development does not stop after mentorship. Term four - the Launch phase (nine months) - is where you begin operating as an adviser.

Initially under supervision, then with increasing independence, you will:

    • Begin advising clients directly
    • Build your own client relationships
    • Identify your areas of development

    Support continues through:

    • Ongoing coaching
    • Feedback and supervision
    • Additional training modules
    • Access to an external coach

This is where your career begins to take shape. Not just as a qualified individual, but as a practising adviser.

    Explore the Academy

    • 3+ years in sales or customer-facing roles
    • The ability to build relationships
    • The willingness to learn and develop

The Academy is designed for individuals with experience working with people. Because while finance can be taught, the ability to work with people is what defines success.

Progress is tracked through a structured feedback process. This includes:

    • Weekly one-to-one sessions
    • Client meeting reviews
    • Ongoing development discussions

You will always know where you are, and what comes next.

Is the training online or in person?

It’s a combination of both, however, the core mentorship experience is in person, either in an office or on-site with clients. Because that’s where real learning happens.

    Progress is measured through:

    • Observed client work
    • Technical understanding
    • Communication and judgement

Is there support beyond the programme?

Yes. Support continues through ongoing coaching, peer learning and access to training and resources. We believe development is continuous, not time-limited.
