    Capability is built, not assumed.

At Mattioli Woods, becoming a financial adviser isn’t treated as a single step. It’s a structured journey designed to build knowledge, confidence and judgement over time.

We look at the journey, stage by stage. Each phase exists for a reason with each building on the last, so by the time you reach the point of advising clients, you’re not just qualified – you’re ready.

A four-term programme that builds real capability

    • First, you build the technical foundations
    • Then you learn how those principles are applied
    • Then you develop through real experience and mentorship
    • And finally, you build confidence through supported independence

The Academy is structured into four terms - each designed to build capability in the right order. This progression ensures learning is not rushed, and that each stage prepares you properly for what comes next.

    Businessmen shaking hands

    Term 1 (3.5 months) - Building credibility

This first stage focuses on giving you the knowledge required to obtain the qualifications needed to become a financial adviser in the UK.

To provide regulated financial advice, you must hold a Level 4 Diploma in Regulated Financial Planning – a qualification recognised by the Financial Conduct Authority.

At Mattioli Woods, you will work towards this through the Chartered Insurance Institute (CII), one of the leading professional bodies for financial planning qualifications.

During this term, you will complete:

    • R02: Investment principles and risk:
You will learn how investments work, how risk is assessed, and how portfolios are constructed.
    • R03: Personal taxation:
You will build a practical understanding of the UK tax system and how it shapes financial decisions.
    • R04: Pensions and retirement planning:
You will understand how pension schemes operate and how they support long-term financial security.
    • R05: Financial protection:
You will explore how individuals and families protect themselves against financial risk.

Alongside this, you will develop your understanding of:

    • Regulation and compliance
    • The structure of financial advice in the UK
    • Core financial planning principles

This stage is demanding as you’re learning a new discipline – and building knowledge across multiple areas at once.

But as it’s structured you won’t be studying in isolation.

You will be supported through guided learning, access to experienced advisers, and a clear framework that helps you connect each area of knowledge.

The focus isn’t solely on passing exams although the results reflect the strength of our approach – with pass rates consistently well above industry averages.

More importantly, this stage gives you a foundation you can rely on – one that allows you to move into the next stage with confidence.

This is where you begin to build credibility in your own understanding, and as a future adviser.

    Module 1

RO2 - Investment principles and risk

    Module 2

    RO3 - Personal taxation

    Module 3

RO4 - Pensions and retirement planning

Working for Mattioli Woods: The Client Relationship Manager

In this short video, we meet some of our current client relationship managers to discuss key topics surrounding this important Mattioli Woods role, including recruitment, training and coaching, the day-to-day role, progression, flexibility and social life.

Term two – Learning to advise

Once you’ve built the technical foundation, the focus shifts.

This stage is about turning what you’ve learned into practical know-how in a structured, supported environment.

You move from learning what to know to understanding how to use it.

At Mattioli Woods, advice is not just about knowledge. It’s about how you apply that knowledge – consistently, thoughtfully and in the client’s best interest. This is where you begin to learn the Mattioli Woods Way.

Within the safe environment of the classroom, you will start applying your knowledge to realistic client scenarios. You will work through:

    • Case studies based on real-life financial situations
    • Structured exercises that mirror client conversations
    • Practical examples of how financial plans are built
    • The systems and processes used to support advice delivery
    • Guided discussions on how to approach more complex decisions

As you do this, you will begin to develop:

    • A clear understanding of the advice process
    • The ability to structure and lead client conversations
    • The judgement to identify what really matters to a client
    • The confidence to translate complex information into clear, usable guidance

You will also prepare for and complete the R06 case study exam, where you apply your knowledge to a realistic client scenario – testing not just what you know, but how you think.

This stage is designed to build your confidence before you move into real client situations and you will be encouraged to:

    • Test your thinking
    • Make decisions
    • Learn from feedback
    • Refine your approach

All within an environment where you are supported, and where mistakes are part of how you develop.

This stage bridges the gap between theory and practice. It’s where your knowledge becomes judgement and where you begin to think – and operate – like an adviser.

Working for Mattioli Woods: The Recruitment Process

In this short video, we meet some of our previous FSDS recruits to discuss the recruitment process in full. We aspects such as: how to apply, open events, our shortlisting process, assessment days, meeting the team, the all-important interview, and the final stage…

Term three - Learning alongside experienced advisers

This is where development becomes real.

You move beyond the classroom and into the day-to-day reality of financial advice – working closely with experienced advisers and becoming part of how advice is delivered in practice. You’re not observing from a distance, you’re immersed.

You will work alongside some of the most experienced advisers in the business, gaining direct exposure to how they think, how they approach decisions, and how they build long-term client relationships.

This level of access is difficult to replicate. It allows you to learn not just what good advice looks like, but how it’s delivered, consistently and professionally.

    During this stage, you will:

    • Shadow real client meetings and see how conversations are structured
    • Observe how complex financial decisions are approached and explained
    • Begin contributing to client work, with support
    • Receive detailed, personalised feedback on your development
    • Refine your communication, judgement and decision-making

As your confidence grows, so does your responsibility.

You move from observation to participation to supported contribution.

This stage is not standardised in the same way as exams, it’s tailored. Your development is shaped through one-to-one mentorship – ensuring you’re supported in the areas where you need it most, and challenged where it matters.

“Being able to work alongside a senior adviser changes how quickly people develop. It allows you to see how decisions are made, not just learn the theory behind them.”
– Amal Mashru, Wealth Management Consultant, Mattioli Woods

You’re learning from people who do this every day. People who have built long-term client relationships and navigated different market conditions. People who understand the nuance that cannot be taught in a classroom.

That proximity matters because it accelerates your development in a way that theory alone cannot.

This stage builds confidence, not through repetition alone, but through:

    • Exposure to real situations
    • Reflection on your decisions
    • Ongoing guidance and feedback

It’s where your understanding deepens and where you begin to operate with greater confidence, clarity and intent.

At the end of this stage, you will complete a final assessment which is designed to ensure you are ready to move forward – bringing together your technical knowledge, practical experience and developing judgement.

Progression into the final term is not assumed. It reflects that you’re prepared to take the next step.

Term four (nine months) - Building confidence and consistency

Having demonstrated your readiness at the end of term 3, you move into the final stage of the programme. This is where everything comes together.

You step into the role more fully – beginning to advise clients yourself, initially under supervision.

This is a significant shift as you are no longer observing or contributing. You’re applying your knowledge in real client situations, with the support and oversight needed to do so confidently and responsibly.

    During this stage, you will:

    • Begin advising clients, with guidance and supervision
    • Take ownership of client relationships over time
    • Apply your knowledge across a range of real scenarios
    • Build consistency in how you approach advice and decision-making
    • Continue refining your communication, judgement and professional style

The focus here shifts from learning how to advise to doing it consistently, with confidence.

Alongside your client work, you will take part in a structured nine-month development programme designed specifically for you as a newly qualified adviser .

This is not classroom training. It’s a performance and behavioural development system, designed to help you transition from qualification into a confident, commercially effective adviser.

As part of this, you will receive:

    • One-to-one coaching with an external development partner
    • Monthly development sessions focused on communication, confidence and performance
    • A personalised development plan, shaped around your strengths and areas for growth
    • Structured goal-setting and performance tracking, helping you build consistency
    • Emotional intelligence and behavioural development, supporting how you work with clients

This programme focuses on the areas that matter most at this stage:

    • How you manage yourself
    • How you communicate with clients
    • How you build trust and credibility
    • How you develop commercial awareness and discipline

Development is structured, personalised and continuous – you’re not left to work this out on your own. You’re supported through a combination of coaching, feedback, real-world experience and structured reflection.

Over time, this builds greater self-awareness, stronger communication skills, more consistent performance, and confidence in how you approach both clients and decisions. Supervision reduces as your capability grows, but development doesn’t stop.

This stage is about more than applying knowledge. It’s about developing the habits, behaviours and mindset that define long-term success. Because in financial advice, success is built on consistency – the ability to build trust, communicate clearly, make well-judged decisions, and operate with professionalism every day.

By the end of this stage, you’re not just qualified, you’re operating as an adviser – with confidence in your thinking, clarity in your approach, and a foundation you can continue to build on.

This is where the transition completes – from learning, to capability, to a career.

Frequently asked questions about programme structure

When will I become qualified as a financial adviser?

You will complete the core qualifications during the first two terms of the programme.

In term one, you will achieve R02–R05, building the technical foundation across investments, taxation, pensions and protection.

In term two, you will complete the R06 case study exam – bringing together your knowledge in a practical context – and achieve the Level 4 Diploma in Regulated Financial Planning.

At that point, you are qualified.

However, qualification and readiness are not the same.

Becoming an adviser requires more than passing exams. It requires experience, judgement and the confidence to apply your knowledge in real client situations.

That is developed through terms three and four.

Typically, you will begin advising clients after around 12 months – initially under supervision – once you have demonstrated the capability required to do so.

Can I join at term two if I already hold relevant qualifications?

The Academy is designed as a structured, end-to-end programme. Even if you hold qualifications, the focus on application, development and consistency means the full journey is important.

What happens if I don’t pass the stage one exams first time?

You will be supported to retake exams, with additional guidance and development where needed. The focus is on ensuring you build the required understanding – not simply progressing through stages.

Do I need a relevant degree to complete the programme?

No, the programme is designed for individuals from a range of backgrounds. What matters more is your ability to learn, your mindset, and your commitment to developing over time.
