My route into financial advice was slightly different to many in the profession. After completing a master’s degree in biology, I worked in research and development, helping to develop diagnostic tests for blood diseases. I later moved into a client support and training role, working closely with hospitals and NHS teams to resolve technical issues and explain complex information in a straightforward way. It was this element of helping people understand complicated subjects that I enjoyed most and ultimately led me towards a career in financial planning.
Once I began earning, saving and paying into a pension, I got genuinely interested: reading, listening to finance podcasts, talking to people about it. What struck me is how many people simply don’t have the time, interest or confidence to navigate financial matters themselves. I saw an opportunity to help clients make informed decisions and gain clarity around their future plans.
My scientific background means I’m comfortable with the technical side and pick things up quickly, but where I think I really stand apart is temperament. I take a calm, measured approach to my work, and I make a conscious effort to maintain that, particularly when things get busy or stressful.
Today, I combine an analytical mindset with a calm and approachable style. I believe successful financial planning is about more than technical expertise; it’s about building trust, understanding what clients want to achieve and providing confidence through both the opportunities and challenges life can bring. Whether clients are planning for retirement, growing their wealth or preparing for future generations, my goal is to help them feel confident that they are making progress towards what matters most to them. Not just ‘more money’ or ‘more security’, but what that actually means for them, in five, ten, or twenty years. Markets move, and clients react in all kinds of ways. My role is to stay level-headed through that, to be a steady presence that instils confidence, so that when the harder times come, the trust is already there. And when the good times arrive, I can point back to the plan we set together and say: this is what we were working towards, and we’ve got there.
Outside of work, I still enjoy playing and following football, having been involved in the sport since childhood. I’m also a keen runner, with a few half marathons behind me and the Leicester half marathon in my sights this year. Furthermore, perhaps inevitably, I’m currently renovating my own house, and building a home and a family life with my partner.
