Growing up in Ireland I’ve had an interest in finance for as long as I can remember. Accountancy was one of my major exams when I left school, and I went on to study accountancy and finance at university.
I started working in general insurance for Norwich Union (now Aviva) during my degree and went on to work at Standard Life after I finished. I was approached by a financial advising firm shortly afterwards, and that was 24 years ago.
What I’m acutely aware of, doing this work, is that the decisions we make with clients have not just an immediate impact but a much longer-term one too. Acting with respect and integrity will get you a long way in this profession. Beyond that, it’s a people business.
Over 90% of my clients I’ve worked with for more than 10 years, and some for 20 or more. Naturally, you get to know people well over that kind of time – you know their families and they know yours. Coming from a big family and now bringing up two young children of my own, I find a lot of the planning issues clients face cross over directly with the ones I’m thinking about anyway – funding children through education, cascading wealth to the next generation, Inheritance Tax (IHT) planning, balancing today’s life against the longer view. It helps that I can genuinely relate.
Outside of work, I’m a family man with two young kids who consume most of my time, in the best possible way. I played a lot of football and rugby growing up and still follow the Ireland rugby team passionately. Travelling further afield is one of the things I most enjoy when the opportunity comes up.
