The small financial habit that makes a big difference

It’s not about earning more – it’s about checking in. Discover how a mid-year financial reset can boost your confidence, strengthen your plans, and bring real financial peace of mind.

At the start of the year, many of us set good financial intentions – reviewing budgets, saving more, or planning ahead. But as the months pass, life gets busy and those plans can quietly slip down the priority list.

That’s why a mid-year financial checkup matters just as much, if not more. It gives you the chance to pause, reset, and make sure you’re still heading in the direction you intended.

Think of two people – James and Sarah.

James makes time every July to review his finances. He checks his spending, updates his savings goals, and makes sure his insurance still reflects his needs. These small, consistent habits help him feel in control and steadily improve his financial wellbeing.

Sarah starts the year with a plan but rarely revisits it. Her Direct Debits continue unchecked, her savings stall, and she assumes everything is ‘probably fine’. Over time, those small gaps grow into bigger issues – unexpected costs feel harder to manage, and her long-term plans become less certain.

The difference is not dramatic action – it’s simply taking the time to check in.

    Why a mid-year reset helps

Six months can bring a lot of change – shifts in income, rising living costs, or changes in personal circumstances. A mid-year review helps you stay aligned with reality, not just intentions.

It’s also a powerful step towards financial empowerment. Rather than reacting to problems, you’re actively managing your financial future.

    Where to focus

A mid-year financial check doesn’t need to be complicated. Start with a few key areas:

    • Do your budget planner – Take a fresh look at what’s coming in and going out. Even small adjustments can make a noticeable difference.
    • Tackle debt – Review balances and interest rates. Could you overpay, refinance, or prioritise certain debts to reduce costs over time?
    • Build your emergency fund – Having a financial buffer, often quoted as three to six months of essential outgoings, can ease pressure when unexpected expenses arise.
    • Check your Direct Debits – Are you still using everything you’re paying for? Subscriptions and old policies can easily be overlooked.
    • Review your income goals – Are you on track, or do you need to rethink your approach?

    Check your protection and benefits

It’s easy to overlook financial protection, especially if it’s provided through your employer. However, your circumstances may have changed.

    Take a moment to consider:

    • Is your life cover still enough for your current situation?
    • What would happen if you were unable to work for a prolonged period? Does your employer provide you with income protection or would you need to rely on your emergency fund?
    • Employers often offer a range of benefits to employees, are you aware of your benefits, understand what they provide and are able to make full use of them?

Reviewing these areas can provide valuable financial peace of mind and help ensure you and your family are protected.

    Think about your future self

A mid-year check is also a good time to look ahead:

    • Are your pension contributions still appropriate?
    • Will the future changes to Inheritance Tax legislation on pensions and/or salary exchange payments impact your plan?
    • Have your long-term goals changed?
    • Are you making the most of available support or advice?

Small adjustments now can have a meaningful impact over time, helping you stay on track for the future you want.

Take control of your financial wellbeing

A mid-year financial checkup is not about getting everything perfect. It’s about staying aware, making informed decisions, and taking control where you can.

If you have access to workplace support, such as financial education sessions, webinars, or one-to-one guidance, these can be a helpful way to build confidence and improve your financial wellbeing.

Importantly, don’t become overwhelmed – life events happen and situations change all the time. If you feel like you need support, then you can reach out to organisations like Citizens Advice (www.citizensadvice.org.uk) or a debt charity like StepChange (www.stepchange.org).
