On the first week of my career back in 1991, a trainer said something to me that I’ve never forgotten: clients only ever have two problems. They either die too soon – leaving their family exposed – or they live too long, and worry whether their money will last. Everything I do as a financial adviser comes back to those two things. It’s a simple idea but after 35 years in this industry, I’m more convinced than ever that it’s exactly right.
I’ve been in financial services since 1991, working across everything from global firms to small independents before joining what is now Mattioli Woods in 2007. For 12 years, I served as Team Director for the Scotland wealth management offices, and last year I stepped back from that to focus entirely on what I love most: working directly with clients.
Ask advisers what they enjoy most about the job and the majority will say pensions or investments. My answer is different: it’s people. The most fascinating part of what I do is understanding how people think about money – their motivations, their fears, the reasons they act or don’t act. What I’m really offering is a solution to a problem. You can recommend the right pension without ever using the word pension, if you’re focused on what the client actually needs.
I think of financial planning as a journey. You start with a destination in mind and a roadmap to get there. Along the way, there will be diversions – a change in legislation, a shift in markets, a change in personal circumstances. But if you always keep the destination in sight, you can navigate whatever comes up. My job is to help my clients do that and to make sure that whether they’re worrying about dying too soon or living too long, they have a plan that covers both.
Away from work, you’ll most likely find me on one of my four motorbikes. I got my licence at 50 – a late bloomer by most bikers’ standards. I’m also a long-suffering supporter of the Scottish rugby team.
