“It’s the soft things, really. People are grateful you’ll give them the time to talk things through, and that your advice is genuinely focused on what’s right for them.”
I remember the 2008 financial crisis well – not because I understood economics at nine years old, but because of a conversation I had with my mum. She needed money, and I offered to lend her the £17 I’d saved up.
That moment made me realise something fundamental about money: how easily it can become a source of worry and stress. Being able to provide guidance and support to help alleviate that stress is what drives me in this job.
After obtaining a master’s degree in international financial and political relations, I began my career at an investment firm in Leicester but soon realised I wanted to be in front of clients rather than sat behind a desk. I joined Mattioli Woods in 2023 and now work directly with clients on their pensions, wealth management and Inheritance Tax planning.
What gets me up every morning is that people need and want advice, and I’m in a position to provide it. I feel a sense of duty to do so, not just because they’re paying clients, but because we have the knowledge to help them navigate decisions that really matter.
There’s a tendency in wealth management for people to over‑save and under‑live. I’ve had clients with a million‑pound estate talking about trips to South America, the Caribbean and beyond, and I just say, ‘Why don’t you go?’
A lot of clients just want to know that everything’s all right. Sometimes they need permission to enjoy what they’ve worked for.
I’m thankful to be in a role where I can help people protect what matters to them, while also encouraging them to enjoy the wealth they’ve built. For me, it’s about finding that balance – enough security for the future, but also the confidence to live well in the present.
Outside of work, I try to keep the same balance I encourage in my clients. I moved from Leicester to London in 2024 and spend my time exploring the city, going to the gym, playing football and fitting in the occasional round of golf. Like most, I’m also quite partial to an international trip when I’m able to get away.
