World record holder Sammi is among top athletes taking part in the Godiva Classic in Coventry, which is developing into a showcase competition for wheelchair racers in the UK.

She will feature in the 100m, 200m, 400m and 800m events as she makes her first appearance of the new athletics season.

Sammi last raced at the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games in Australia back in April but has been putting in the hours on the training field, according to coach Ian Mirfin.

He says: “Sammi is in great shape and has worked really hard since took a break in Australia after the Commonwealth Games.

“This is just a low key return to put some times on the board, but Sammi will be giving it her usual 100 per cent and has set herself some personal time targets.”

Ian says the 22-year-old’s medium term aims are to post impressive times at major meetings next May to secure qualification for the World Championships in Dubai in November.

She will then build towards Tokyo 2020 - the summer Olympic and Paralympic Games – which promises to be the pinnacle of her athletics career.

Sammi was left paralysed after a freak accident on her father’s farm in the Scottish Borders when she was just 14-years-old.

She has gone on to be the world record holder at 200m and European record holder at 100m, 400m and 800m.

Mattioli Woods has sponsored her since the fledgling days of her time as an athlete and remains one of her most loyal supporters.
