Our Environmental, Social and Governance strategy
Mattioli Woods has had our environmental, social, governance (ESG) and community purpose in our hearts since opening our doors in 1991. The MWEXCiTE programme, launched in 2022, is our company wide programme to refresh, energise and enhance our Environmental, Social and Governance commitment and awareness.
Mattioli Woods has kept our clients, colleagues and wider stakeholders in our hearts and minds for over 30 years.
ESG is not only essential for the planet but also our communities which is why we are not standing still.
MWEXCiTE is our programme to refresh, energise and enhance our ESG commitment and awareness throughout the business and stakeholders.
After Mattioli Woods took a minority stake in Amati Global Investors in 2017, the two business have worked extremely closely together. One of our jointly held beliefs is supporting local charities and making a difference in the community. To this end, we have raised an incredible £571,696 which has been, and will continue to be, distributed to charities that are important to our people using our charity nomination process.
As part of our MWEXCiTE programme at Mattioli Woods, we listen. The sentiment of ESG has long been embedded within our culture, this is shown by the 20 diverse and passionate members of staff who are a part of our ESG Engagement team. Within the team, chaired by the ESG Partner and led by the ESG Committee, we strive to make effective and meaningful decisions and have important conversations on exactly what we think we can all do to make Mattioli Woods more socially and environmentally responsible.
18 members of staff currently on our apprenticeship programme.
10 graduates completing Mattioli Woods work experience.
80 individuals undertaking additional qualifications.
Mattioli Woods believes in the importance of board level ESG governance. We recognise that environmental, social and governance issues can have significant impact on our reputation, brand and financial performance. Therefore, we have a dedicated PLC board ESG committee which is responsible for overseeing our ESG policies and practices, ensuring we manage ESG risks effectively, engage with stakeholders and create long-term value for our shareholders. By prioritising ESG governance at board level, we can demonstrate our commitment to responsible and sustainable business practices.
We believe environmental, social and governance factors can have a material impact on investment returns. Our proprietary ESGi process seeks to score our underlying investments on the ESG risk they pose. This forms a key element of our investment research process across our product range.
For clients who want to access our multi-asset strategies but wish to reflect concerns around areas such as the environment, tobacco and gambling, we have our Ethical multi-asset portfolios. We offer nine risk-rated model portfolios, with criteria around 11 ethically contentious areas.
Instead of avoiding areas that are potentially harmful, our Responsible Equity Fund seeks to invest in companies that promote the positive development of our world, in areas such as clean energy, improved nutrition, sustainable agriculture and inclusive and equitable education.
Mattioli Woods Responsible Equity Fund
The Responsible Equity Fund invests solely in equities, with a global remit. We define ‘responsible investing’ as ‘aiming to generate attractive long-term returns, while ensuring companies owned are behaving in the interests of their communities and wider society’.
We believe we offer a fund that has a unique proposition in this area:
We look to blend direct equities in the UK with geographic and thematic funds from around the world we blend growth and value investment styles to lower volatility we align our holdings with the UN Sustainable Development Goals and have an overall focus on identifying companies that are improving their sustainability credentials we use our proprietary ESGi process to analyse ESG risk and use minimum scores for holdings
