Term 1 (3.5 months) - Building credibility
This first stage focuses on giving you the knowledge required to obtain the qualifications needed to become a financial adviser in the UK.
To provide regulated financial advice, you must hold a Level 4 Diploma in Regulated Financial Planning – a qualification recognised by the Financial Conduct Authority.
At Mattioli Woods, you will work towards this through the Chartered Insurance Institute (CII), one of the leading professional bodies for financial planning qualifications.
During this term, you will complete:
- R02: Investment principles and risk: You will learn how investments work, how risk is assessed, and how portfolios are constructed.
- R03: Personal taxation: You will build a practical understanding of the UK tax system and how it shapes financial decisions.
- R04: Pensions and retirement planning: You will understand how pension schemes operate and how they support long-term financial security.
- R05: Financial protection: You will explore how individuals and families protect themselves against financial risk.
Alongside this, you will develop your understanding of:
- Regulation and compliance
- The structure of financial advice in the UK
- Core financial planning principles
This stage is demanding as you’re learning a new discipline – and building knowledge across multiple areas at once.
But as it’s structured you won’t be studying in isolation.
You will be supported through guided learning, access to experienced advisers, and a clear framework that helps you connect each area of knowledge.
The focus isn’t solely on passing exams although the results reflect the strength of our approach – with pass rates consistently well above industry averages.
More importantly, this stage gives you a foundation you can rely on – one that allows you to move into the next stage with confidence.
This is where you begin to build credibility in your own understanding, and as a future adviser.
