Training for part or fully qualified financial advisers

There’s a point in most financial advice careers where the question changes. It’s no longer How do I qualify?. It becomes How do I become an adviser?

The Mattioli Woods Financial Adviser Academy is designed to bridge the gap, helping you move from technical competence to professional capability, and into your first (or next) financial adviser role.

    You may already have:

+ Completed some of your R0 exams
    + Achieved a Level 4 qualification
+ Or built experience within financial services

But moving from qualification to real client advice is not automatic. It requires:

    + Judgement
    + Confidence
+ The ability to apply knowledge in real situations

This is where many people feel stuck.

Want to take your qualifications further?

Passing exams is an important milestone. But it’s only part of becoming a financial adviser. There’s a difference between ‘understanding tax rules’ and ‘applying them to a complex, multi-generational client situation. Between ‘knowing how pensions work’ and ‘advising a client on how to structure their retirement income’.

This is the gap many partially or newly qualified individuals encounter. You may have the knowledge, but not yet the experience or confidence to use it fully.

At Mattioli Woods, the Academy is designed to close that gap. It combines:

    • Completion of any remaining Level 4 qualifications
    • Structured training in how advice is delivered in practice
    • Real exposure to client scenarios
    • Mentorship from experienced advisers

This creates a more complete development pathway. Not just helping you qualify, but helping you become an adviser clients can rely on.

    For those who are:

    • Part-qualified and looking to complete their exams
    • Newly qualified and looking for their first adviser role
    • Working within financial services and ready to step forward

The Academy provides a clear and supported route into the profession.

How the Mattioli Woods Adviser Academy helps advance your career

Expertise in financial advice is not defined by exams alone. It’s built through a combination of technical understanding, practical application and the ability to work effectively with people.

At Mattioli Woods, advisers are often working in areas of real complexity – particularly in:

    + Pensions
    + Tax planning
    + Intergenerational wealth

This requires more than knowledge. It requires:

+ The ability to join the dots
    + To interpret complex situations
+ To guide clients through important decisions

And crucially, to build trust over time. The Academy reflects this reality and takes a holistic approach, combining:

+ Completion of qualifications (where needed)
+ Development of communication and judgement
+ Exposure to real advisory scenarios

Because becoming an adviser isn’t about knowing more. It’s about applying what you know – consistently and confidently.

What the Academy offers experienced participants

For those who are already part-qualified or qualified, the Academy doesn’t reset your progress – it builds on it. The focus shifts away from learning the basics and towards developing into a professional adviser. You will benefit from:

    Working with real client situations

Learning alongside a cohort at a similar stage

Structured development focused on advice, not just exams

    Mentorship from experienced advisers

*Subject to your contract's terms and conditions.

This creates a different kind of progression. You’re not starting again, you’re moving forward, with structure and support.

    Is this right for me?

Using your existing experience and qualifications

Your existing qualifications and experience are recognised from the outset. Development is not one-size-fits-all. For those who are part-qualified or already hold a Level 4 qualification, the early stages of the programme - terms one and two - can be adapted to reflect what you have already completed.

This ensures your time is focused where it adds the most value. Your development is shaped around:
    What you have already achieved

    • What you still need to complete (if anything)
    • Where your strengths and development areas sit

    This typically includes:

    • Chartered Insurance Institute (CII) qualification support (where required)
    • Full funding for any remaining exams
    • Study support and structured preparation

“What we’re looking for isn’t just knowledge, but the ability to apply it. The Academy provides the structure, support and exposure needed to help people make that transition.”
- David Wright, Wealth Management Consultant, Mattioli Woods

This approach ensures you’re not repeating what you already know. Instead, you move more quickly into the areas that matter most:

    • Developing judgement
    • Building confidence
    • Learning how to advise in real situations

By the end of the programme, you’re not just qualified, you’re operating as a Mattioli Woods adviser.

The Academy isn’t just a training programme; it’s a salaried role from day one. This removes the financial pressure often associated with:

    • Self-funded study
    • Early-stage self-employment
    • Commission-based environments

Instead, you can focus on developing your capability, applying your knowledge and building towards your adviser role.

    Our team

Qualifications you’ll achieve during the programme

Depending on your starting point, this may include:

    + Completing remaining R0 exams
+ Achieving the Level 4 Diploma in Regulated Financial Planning
+ Developing communication and advisory skills alongside study

The key difference is how this is delivered. You’re not studying in isolation, you’re:

+ Applying knowledge as you learn
+ Building confidence through real experience
+ Developing both technical and professional capability

    Beyond the Academy

The Academy is the starting point, not the end. Once qualified and operating as an adviser, your career continues to develop.

    This may include:

    • Building a long-term client base
    • Specialising in areas such as pensions, investments or tax planning
    • Progressing into senior advisory or leadership roles
    • Working towards Chartered status

Over time, your role becomes more complex, valuable and defined. This is a profession where experience compounds.

Frequently asked questions for qualified applicants

Do I have to start from the beginning if I’m already partially qualified?

No – your existing progress is recognised from the outset.

If you have already completed some of your Level 4 exams, you will not repeat them. Instead, the early stages of the programme – terms one and two – are adapted to reflect what you have already achieved.

This means your focus shifts more quickly towards:

    • Completing any remaining qualifications
    • Applying your knowledge in practice
    • Developing the skills needed to advise clients

The structure remains, but your path is adjusted so you continue moving forward, rather than starting again.

Will Mattioli Woods fund my remaining exams?

    Yes.

All remaining qualifications are fully funded, with structured support to help you complete them.

Do I have to join for the full year if I’m fully qualified?

Not necessarily. The programme is structured, but your starting point is considered on a case-by-case basis.

If you already hold a Level 4 qualification, you may be able to join a cohort at a later stage, depending on:

    • Your previous experience
    • Your level of readiness to apply your knowledge in practice

The focus is not on repeating content, it’s on building capability, developing the judgement, confidence and real-world experience required to operate as an adviser.

The structure remains, but your path through it reflects where you’re starting from.

Is the CII Level 4 different to the DipFA?

Both are Level 4 qualifications that meet the requirements to provide regulated financial advice in the UK.

They cover broadly the same core knowledge areas, but are structured differently.
The Chartered Insurance Institute (CII) Diploma in Regulated Financial Planning:

    • Is built around individual exams (R01–R06)
    • Each exam focuses on a specific area of financial planning
    • Offers flexibility in how and when you progress

The London Institute of Banking & Finance (LIBF) Diploma for Financial Advisers (DipFA):

    • Covers similar subject areas
    • Is structured into modular units, often delivered in smaller, more progressive stages
    • Typically combines different forms of assessment alongside exams
    • Both routes enable you to advise clients.

At Mattioli Woods, we support the CII route, reflecting its broad recognition across the profession and alignment with how advisers develop alongside real client work.

I have a DipFA, do I need the CII Level 4 as well?

No, you do not need both.

However, some advisers choose to complete additional qualifications depending on their career goals.

How does the Academy support my journey to Chartered status?

The Academy provides the foundation. From there, advisers can choose to progress towards Chartered status – it’s not a requirement, but an option for those who want to develop further.

For those who do, support is available to help you:

    • Deepen your technical expertise
    • Build on your experience
    • Continue your professional development over time

Chartered status, awarded by the Chartered Insurance Institute, is widely recognised as a mark of advanced knowledge and long-term commitment to the profession.
