    CII Diploma in Financial Planning

To become a financial adviser, you first need to become qualified. In the UK, that means achieving a Level 4 qualification in regulated financial planning – the standard required to provide financial advice.

This page tells you all you need to know about the CII Diploma in Financial Planning

There are three main awarding bodies through which this can be achieved:

Each route leads to the same outcome – becoming qualified to advise clients.

At Mattioli Woods, we support the CII Level 4 Diploma in Regulated Financial Planning – a widely recognised qualification across the profession and the route delivered through our Financial Adviser Academy. But qualification is only the starting point.

The Academy is designed not just to help you pass exams, but to develop you into a confident, capable adviser – combining structured learning with real-world experience.

Whether you’re starting your journey or building on existing experience, it provides a clear pathway from qualification to capability to a long-term career.

What is the Level 4 diploma in financial planning?

It covers the core areas needed to advise clients on:

    + Investments
    + Pensions
    + Tax planning
    + Protection

And ensures advisers meet the standards set by the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA).

In simple terms, it’s what allows you to move from learning about finance to professionally advising clients.

Who is the CII Level 4 diploma for?

    • Have some professional or life experience
    • Are comfortable working with people
    • Are willing to study and develop over time

The diploma is designed for individuals looking to build a career in financial advice. You don’t need a background in finance, however, it is suited to those who:

Female psychologist talking to young man during session.
Young professionals or students collaborating in a bright, contemporary co-working environment, displaying teamwork and productivity.

Within the Mattioli Woods Financial Adviser Academy, typical candidates include:

+ Career changers with transferable skills
+ Individuals already working in financial services
+ Part-qualified candidates looking to complete their exams

What matters most is not where you start, but your ability to develop into a professional adviser.

What’s the structure of the course?

The Chartered Insurance Institute Level 4 Diploma in Regulated Financial Planning is structured around six core exams (R01-R06), each covering a key area of financial advice.

Within the Mattioli Woods Financial Adviser Academy, these are delivered in a clear sequence across the first two terms (approximately six months):

    • Term one (3.5 months) – R02–R05
    • Term two (2.5 months) – R06 and completion of the diploma

This reflects how the qualification is designed – first building technical knowledge, then applying it in practice through the final case-study assessment.

The result is a structured pathway that allows you to learn, apply and progress with purpose, rather than studying in isolation.

Exams are sat throughout the programme, rather than at a single fixed point. This allows for:

    • Focused preparation
    • Consistent momentum between modules
    • Immediate application of learning

You’re supported with structured study plans, guided revision and ongoing training.

    Assessments

Assessment for the Chartered Insurance Institute Level 4 Diploma is exam-based and structured across the six units.

    It consists of:

    Multiple-choice exams (R01-R05)
Testing your understanding of core technical knowledge across regulation, investments, taxation, pensions and protection

    A written case study (R06)
Assessing your ability to apply that knowledge in realistic client scenarios

    • The structure reflects how advisers develop in practice:
    • First, you build technical knowledge
    • Then, you demonstrate how you apply it

R06 is particularly important, as it brings all areas together and tests your ability to think like an adviser, not just recall information.

Support throughout the exam process. You’re supported with:

    • Structured study plans
    • Practice exams and revision sessions
    • Guidance from tutors and experienced advisers

This ensures you’re not preparing for exams in isolation, but developing understanding alongside application.

Benefits of the CII Level 4 diploma for financial planning

Achieving the Chartered Insurance Institute Level 4 Diploma in Regulated Financial Planning is the step that allows you to move from learning about finance to working as a professional adviser.

    It provides:

    • The qualification required to give regulated financial advice
    • A recognised standard across the profession
    • A clear entry point into financial planning roles
    • A foundation for long-term career progression

But the value is not just in the qualification itself. On its own, a diploma gives you knowledge, what matters is how you use it.

At Mattioli Woods, the Financial Adviser Academy is designed to build on that foundation. Alongside the qualification, you gain:

    • Structured development – a clear pathway, rather than self-directed study
    • Real client exposure – applying knowledge as you learn
    • Mentorship from experienced advisers – learning how decisions are made in practice
    • A defined career trajectory – from qualification through to adviser

The result is different. You’re not just completing exams, you’re developing the capability to advise clients – with confidence, clarity and consistency.

“The qualification is important – but what really matters is how you apply it. That’s where structured development and real experience make the difference.”
- Amal Mashru, Wealth Management Consultant, Mattioli Woods

    CPD pathways

In practice, CPD is not just a regulatory requirement. It is how advisers continue to develop over time. CPD ensures:

+ Knowledge remains up to date as legislation and markets evolve
+ Skills continue to develop beyond initial qualification
+ Professional standards are maintained consistently
+ Advisers build depth and specialism over time

    What counts as CPD?

CPD includes any activity that helps you maintain or improve your ability to advise clients.

This can take a range of forms, including:

    • Formal learning – technical training, qualifications and structured workshops
    • Professional development – industry events, webinars and regulatory updates
    • Practical learning – case discussions, mentoring and real client experience
    • Self-directed learning – reading and keeping up to date with market and legislative changes

Advisers are typically required to complete 35 hours of CPD a year, of which a minimum of 21 hours must be structured learning.

At Mattioli Woods, CPD is structured, practical and ongoing. It forms part of how advisers develop long after qualification, through:

    • Regular technical updates and learning sessions
    • Ongoing coaching and feedback
    • Exposure to more complex client situations
    • Sharing best practice across adviser teams

This creates a consistent rhythm of development – not a one-off training event.

The Level 4 Diploma is the foundation, the Mattioli Woods Financial Adviser Academy is how you build on it.

    • Supported through your qualifications
    • Given real-world experience
    • Developed into a professional adviser
